  2. I would like to expand on the meaning of the words religion, belief and morality. I think it is necessary to separate these concepts from the latter part of the article about morality.

Religions comes from the word re-ligare, which can be translated from Latin as ‘connect again’. The interpertation is to re-connect to that from which connection was lost. Naturally it is talking about something personal, and leads to practices such as prayer, ritual, meditation, etc. Concepts such as ‘truth’ and ‘light’ tend to be the objects to re-connect to. By ‘truth’ I interpret the true nature and order and purpose of the universe. One re-connects with truth and light personally by removing subjectivity, artificialities, lies and pointless pursuits, etc. from one’s way of living.

In Russian the root of the word вера is Веды Ра, which can be translated as the knowledge of the light, or teachings of light. On the surface it means belief, as Vedas relate to books. I think that originally it mean ‘knowledge of light’ in the sense of faith, akin to the purpose of the Vedas.

Because re-ligion is personal, and because people around the world are built in a similar way, it follows that the way it is done will have similarities across the world. This is why forms of prayer, meditation and ritual exist in most if not all cultures. It is also why the symbols of re-ligion (sun, cross, swastika, etc.) exist throughout the world.

Organized religions is not the primary concept of religion, and it is very unfortunate when the two concepts are confused. Organized religions allow people to pursue re-ligion through a common set of methods and with a common world view. Organised religions teach methods and supporting concepts as well as provide support to their followers. Teaching is part of learning, so the true priests of religions are themselves students of the same religions, although at a higher level. It is just like a university. Initiators of religions tend to be remarkable people, which is why many religions make efforts to preserve their message in as original form as possible.

Organized religions convey information to their disciples. Much of this information is not obvious and requires followers of a religion to believe the information to be true. Belief comes from the word bileave, which means having confidence in a person or thing (i.e. by leave of …). Belief is not knowledge, but rather a first step toward knowledge. The position of a true instructor is not based on belief, but rather on knowledge, or faith. The analogy of a university professor vs. a student is also fitting here. The idea that belief in scripture is the end goal is not supported by religious scripture.

Knowledge as well as belief lead to a certain set of morals. Morals come from the Latin word, moralis, which means the proper behavior of a person in society. Morals exist in all societies, whether they be religious or not. The best morals bring happiness to society, and decrease suffering. This means that societies with morals based on understanding of what brings happiness are better off than societies not having such understanding. For example, telling the truth, not stealing, not harming others, marriage, cleanliness, trust, etc. are ways of behaving in a society that uplift the state of society. Not having such morals is detrimental to any society.

Religious practitioners teach morals because the pursuit of re-ligion leads to knowledge of what is beneficial and what is harmful. Therefore you see most true re-ligious practitioners explain the same moral concepts throughout the world (eg. Jesus, Krishna, Viracocha, Osiris) to people in societies that do not practice them. It also follows that pursuit of true re-ligion is part of a well functioning society, as it is knowledge from re-ligion which helps society adjust successfully through different situations.

Adjustment is always necessary. Change is always happening — it is brought about by new circumstances, problems, war, weather, technology, illness (including mental illness), etc. Societies that are not guided by individuals having clear knowledge of good will make mistakes and slowly disintegrate, even if their moral foundation was good. The same situation exists in relation organized religions — when they are not guided well, the organization makes mistakes and disintegrates. This is why it’s inappropriate to judge re-ligion based on religious organizations.
